Görel Hanser, ABBA's long-time manager and often referred to as the 'fifth member', has died at the age of 76. The band announced the sad news in a statement signed by all four members: Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Frida Lyngstad.
Heartbreaking Tribute from ABBA
In a statement shared on social media, the band expressed their deep sorrow: "It is with deepest sorrow we announce the passing of Görel Hanser. We have lost our most loved friend and closest colleague. The loss is immeasurable. We ask that you respect our privacy in this time of grief."
A Career Spanning Decades
Hanser first entered the music industry working at Stig Anderson's publishing company Sweden Music and his record label Polar Music. She became instrumental in managing ABBA's career, handling their relationships with record labels, accompanying them on tours and press events worldwide, and acting as their personal manager.
For her 30th birthday in 1979, the band recorded Sång Till Görel as a gift, an ode to her indispensable role. The song was never played on radio and only a few copies were made, making it a highly sought-after collectible among ABBA memorabilia.
Continued Work After ABBA
After ABBA's breakup, Hanser continued working with the company and later founded her own firm, Music & Artist Service Görel Hanser, in the late 1980s. She managed Benny Andersson's solo projects and oversaw all ABBA-related business. In 2006, she spoke to the international ABBA fan club about her ongoing connection to the band's work, particularly with Mamma Mia! and licensing matters.
Hanser's close relationship with fans and her dedication to the band's legacy made her a beloved figure in the ABBA community. Her passing marks the end of an era for the iconic group.
