Yousuke Yukimatsu: DJ's Mission to Change World with Topless Raves
Yousuke Yukimatsu: Topless Raves for World Peace

Japanese DJ Yousuke Yukimatsu, who beat brain cancer a decade ago, is on a UK tour this August, using his experimental techno sets to promote peace and hope. The 47-year-old, known for his topless performances, aims to inspire change through music.

Surviving Brain Cancer

Ten years ago, Yukimatsu had an epileptic seizure and was diagnosed with a brain tumor after friends found him collapsed. He underwent two craniotomies, chemotherapy, and radiation. The experience led him to dedicate himself full-time to DJing. “If we can keep living tomorrow, if I can encourage people … that’s what I’m always trying to do,” he said. Now in remission, a recent checkup confirmed no tumor.

Rise to Fame

Yukimatsu is often called your favorite DJ’s favorite DJ. A November 2024 Boiler Room set in Tokyo has nearly 20 million views. His Coachella debut in April featured a mix of Beastie Boys, Taylor Swift, and Aphex Twin. “I only had an hour, so I really had to cram everything in,” he said. His style blends techno with diverse genres.

Musical Influences

Growing up in Osaka, he was influenced by his father’s record collection, including Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin. He later discovered electronic music through Underworld and the Prodigy. His big break came when DJ Nobu invited him to Tokyo’s Future Terror night.

Physicality and Message

Yukimatsu’s topless sets reflect his athletic background as a competitive swimmer and years in manual labor. He wears a “no war” pendant and aims to normalize pacifism. “Treat Each Other Right by Jamie xx is a great tune,” he said. “The title is something all the people in the world should engrave in their heart.”

Upcoming UK Tour

Yukimatsu tours the UK from 22-30 August, supporting the Prodigy at open-air gigs. He tailors sets to each country, recently exploring Italian artists like Adiel. “I want to be a better DJ and a better human being,” he said. “It’s a constant growing process, until the day I die.”
