A small animal vet has recommended three dog breeds for anyone looking for a new pet, especially first-time owners.
Vet's Recommendations
Tom Carter, a veterinary surgeon and content creator, shared his top picks in a video on his Instagram page @Things_can_only_get_vetter, which gained over 20,000 likes. He said: "Here are three breeds that I absolutely would have as a small animal veterinary surgeon."
His first recommendation is the Greyhound or any sighthound. He explained that many people want a big dog but lack the lifestyle to match, and Greyhounds are often lazier than expected, fitting most exercise regimes. He noted they are affectionate but prone to dental issues, advising owners to focus on dental care from day one.
Labradors and Border Terriers
His second pick is the Labrador, acknowledging potential health issues like hip and elbow problems, but praising their predictability and suitability for active lifestyles and homes with space.
Finally, he recommended Border Terriers, calling them "cheeky" and "daft," with limited health issues compared to other breeds. He said they are "an absolute delight" in practice and an excellent choice for first-time owners.
