Tributes Paid to Sale Teen Oscar Hughes After Sudden Death

Oscar Hughes, a 16-year-old student at Brent Wood School and College in Sale, died on June 7 following an operation to remove a lesion in his mouth. The cause of death remains unclear.

Community Mourns Oscar's Passing

Oscar, who had Down Syndrome and was diagnosed with autism at an early age, was widely loved in Sale for his infectious smile and warm personality. His mother, Jody Hughes, 49, described him as having the 'best, amazing, beautiful smile' that would light up any room.

Neighbours fondly recalled Oscar waving from his bedroom window each morning and greeting them with hugs after school. 'All the neighbours have known him since he was born. At the local shops, people would run out to say hello to him, he was just absolutely loved,' Jody added.

Fundraiser and Funeral Plans

A fundraiser has been launched to help cover funeral expenses. Oscar had a passion for bright colours, Peppa Pig, odd socks, and toothbrushes. His funeral, themed 'Oscar style', will take place on July 7 at Manchester Crematorium. Female attendees are asked to wear bright and floral outfits, while men are encouraged to wear odd socks and pink ties.

Jody expressed gratitude for the community's response: 'The response has been amazing. To be honest this isn't something you expect. It's a lot of money and our lives have just stopped. Can't go to work, can't do anything. It's been a massive shock in lots of ways, so even the tiniest of donations or the story being shared means the world to us.'

Oscar is survived by his mother Jody, father Shaun, 50, and older brother Alfie, 19.
