Luxmuralis' fifth annual light and sound show, Time, is now illuminating Durham Cathedral until Sunday, October 11. The immersive experience, created by artistic director Peter Walker and composer David Harper, transforms the cathedral's interior with projections, music, and themes exploring the concept of time.
A Journey Through Time and Space
The show begins in darkness at the cathedral entrance, gradually enveloping visitors in sound and sight as images appear to emerge from the stone, flooding over pillars and scrolling from floor to ceiling. Neon-like blues and pinks reveal quiet corners and lesser-noticed features of the building.
Time tells a story from the beginnings of time, drawing on images from literature and worldwide cultures, including famous faces such as Gandhi and Stalin from momentous historical moments, and what appears like an expanding universe. Phrases like 'summer solstice' and 'autumn equinox' appear among the projections, along with phases of the moon and colour explosions like supernovas.
Inspired by H.G. Wells
The show includes numbers counting down and the intricate workings of a clock, apparently inspired by H.G. Wells' The Time Machine, with the novel's name flickering on a wall. Pointers on a clock move backwards, and an hour glass appears with sand flowing the other way.
In the Chapter House, a looming skull fades to black, but a foetus appears with life starting anew. Spring daffodils bloom and die, repeating the cycle if watched long enough. The atmospheric music ebbs and flows with the scenes throughout.
Practical Tips for Visitors
The show takes around 45 minutes to experience, with something different to see in every direction. Visitors are advised to take their time and sit briefly to soak it up. Staggered time slots ensure the crowds are manageable, and there are seats in the nave for those who want to fully immerse themselves.
Most people take pictures throughout, though scenes change quickly. Tickets for the October 7-11 run are available, with some slots already sold out.
