The Art Fund has announced the results of its Great British Museum Quiz, with the Thor's Hammer, a Viking artifact, securing the top spot as the nation's favorite museum object. The quiz, which attracted over 1,000 public nominations, aimed to highlight the diverse and significant items held in UK museums.
Thor's Hammer Takes the Lead
The Thor's Hammer, housed at the British Museum, is a silver-gilt pendant dating from the 10th century, intricately designed with a bearded face and animal heads. According to the Art Fund, the object received the highest number of votes in the quiz, reflecting public fascination with Viking history and mythology.
Jenny Waldman, director of the Art Fund, said: "The Thor's Hammer is a remarkable piece that captures the imagination. It's wonderful to see the public engaging with museum collections and celebrating objects that tell powerful stories."
Other Notable Objects
The quiz also highlighted other popular items, including the Rosetta Stone from the British Museum, the Sutton Hoo helmet, and the Lewis chessmen. The full list of top 10 objects includes a mix of ancient artifacts, artworks, and historical relics from museums across the UK.
More than 100 museums participated in the initiative, which was designed to encourage visits and engagement with local collections. The Art Fund emphasized that the quiz was not a scientific poll but a fun way to spark interest in museum objects.
Public Engagement and Impact
The Great British Museum Quiz generated significant public interest, with thousands of votes cast online. The Art Fund reported a surge in social media activity around the campaign, with users sharing their favorite objects and debating the merits of various items.
Waldman added: "Museums are treasure troves of history and culture. We hope this quiz inspires people to explore their local museums and discover the incredible objects on their doorstep."
