Tattoo artist Nadine Sophia has shared the styles she wants to see more of in 2027, urging people to think outside the box when choosing their next piece of body art. Her predictions come as other tattoo artists reveal the designs they're tired of being asked to ink, claiming some have been repeated "time and time again."
Designs Nadine Wants to See in 2027
Nadine believes there are plenty of ways to make body art stand out, from unusual flowers to mystical creatures and statement fairy wings. She wants people to move beyond conventional floral tattoos, urging them to discover different flowers instead of relying on familiar options such as lilies and peonies.
The tattoo artist would also welcome seeing more mythical beings, including sirens, mermaids and fairies. She explained these designs can be feminine while still possessing a mysterious quality.
Fairy Wings and Bigger Lettering
Nadine highlighted fairy wings as another design she anticipates will gain popularity, particularly large pieces spanning the back rather than smaller, delicate designs. She also forecast that oversized lettering could grow in popularity, especially when combined with other designs, such as a tiger.
She recommended trying out different fonts or colours, including pink lettering, to give text tattoos a more distinctive and personal touch. Nadine encouraged her followers to leave their thoughts on her predictions in the comments section.
'Overrated' Designs Called Out
While Nadine is keen to see people push boundaries with fresh ideas, other tattoo artists have spoken out about designs they feel have grown stale. One tattooist revealed he had grown weary of being asked to ink Arabic script on clients who had no ability to read it.
He said on Reddit: "I am seriously getting tired of doing Arabic scripts. None of the clients can read it." Another artist outlined the designs they regarded as overrated, citing "infinity signs, anchors, feathers bursting into birds, nautical stars, owls, sugar skulls, massive blocks of text, and tiny abstract lines of Helvetica font poetry."
Feathers morphing into bird silhouettes and dandelions dissolving into birds were also highlighted as particularly commonplace choices. "I did two last week and have one to do tomorrow - not to mention the four I've already done in the past six months," one artist said. "The problem is people see them all over Pinterest and the internet and fall in love with them thinking they are artsy and hip."
Artists Defend Popular Designs
Not everybody, however, was in agreement that popular designs posed any issue. One tattoo artist said they were perfectly content to create whatever their clients desired, even if certain designs were deemed to have been done to death. "Although the silly Pinterest tattoos, like the bird silhouettes and infinity symbols are certainly overdone, I am happy to do them," they said.
A fellow artist shared this sentiment, noting that their chief concern was delivering the finest possible outcome for every customer, regardless of the chosen design. "I don't care how many feather-breaking-away-into-birds I've done, if one comes in today, I'll try (as always) to make it the best damn feather-breaking-away-into-birds I can do," they said. "It's my job to respect my clients and give them the best of my abilities and experience no matter what the tattoo is."
They went on to say: "I would never think that an American traditional rose tattoo is overdone, nor do I think an infinity symbol is. If someone likes it, I'm happy to tattoo it on them. I love tattooing. I can't imagine getting all jaded and hateful about it."
