Food content creator and cookbook author Amy Sheppard has told her millions of followers to stop eating Marmite 'raw', sharing a grilling method she says transforms the spread into something 'life-changing'.
What Is Grilled Marmite?
In a TikTok video, Sheppard demonstrated what she calls 'grilled Marmite' or 'baked Marmite'. She starts with two slices of bread, toasting one side under the grill. On the untoasted side, she spreads a generous layer of butter, followed by a 'nice, thick layer of Marmite' – 'thicker than you would normally do'.
She then places the slices, Marmite side up, back under the grill until they turn 'golden brown, and crisp and bubbly'.
Why It Works
According to Sheppard, the grilled Marmite 'doesn't look much different' but the heat changes its texture and flavour. 'When you grill it, it doesn't look much different, does it? But the Marmite goes really sticky and gooey, and has this kind-of chewy, caramelised flavour to it. It's so good,' she said.
In the video's caption, she added: 'This is going to change your Sunday morning Marmite toast... Forever.' She also suggested it would likely 'blow your mind'. She went as far as suggesting that even those who aren't fans of Marmite would likely enjoy the combination.
Fans React and Share Their Own Pairings
Marmite devotees were quick to respond. One commented: 'I eat Marmite every day for brekky. Going to try this.' Another wrote: '[Be right back], heading to the kitchen to try this immediately.'
Others shared their own favourite Marmite pairings, including Marmite with peanut butter and crispy bacon, as well as Marmite and cheese sandwiches. One user suggested: 'Try poached eggs on Marmite on toast...' while another recommended: 'Try Marmite on your steak. Cook one side, turn it over then spread it on the cooked side and then leave it to rest as normal mmmm.'
