Southport pub landlords step down for bakery venture

The owners of an award-winning pub are "handing over the keys for someone to take it into the next chapter". Neil Walsh and Tom Hodgin, who led The Windmill in Southport to national acclaim, are stepping away to pursue a career in baking with the opening of a new bakery.

The Windmill's history and success

The Windmill, described as a "typical English pub", first opened in Southport in 1833. The building originally was three fishermen's cottages but later expanded under various brewers.

In November 2018, Neil and his partner Tom became custodians of The Windmill. Since then, the pub has received national praise, including nominations as the best pub in Merseyside and the North West in the National Pub and Bar Awards numerous years.

Announcing the departure

In a personal update, Neil announced their departure from hospitality. He said: "So after nearly eight years, Tom Hodgin and I are handing over the keys of The Windmill for someone to take it into the next chapter.

"We have exciting things planned and thank everyone for supporting our pub over the last eight years. It wasn’t an easy decision and crying in front of my staff this morning shows how much it meant to us."

New venture: Lord Street Bakery

The couple are now in the process of opening Lord Street Bakery, transforming the former Beer Inn unit in Southport's Northern Quarter.

Neil said: "So as you all know, we’ve made the decision to leave the pub, and for those who’ve known me for years will know I’ve always enjoyed baking. Over the years I’ve made wedding cakes, engagements cakes, novelty cakes and lots of general bakes.

Earlier this year I decided I needed to finally have a go at what got me into catering in the first place, baking. So we’re now in the process of converting a shop and turning it into Lord Street Bakery.

"I sort of just fell into the pub industry and together with Tom, we made it work and a success and I’ve no doubt with lots of hard work and some errors, we will do the same.

I know most of my close friends and even staff are sick of me making cakes so at least other people can buy them eventually." An opening date for Lord Street Bakery is yet to be announced.
