Saltwell Park in Gateshead is set to receive a new junior play area featuring a 9 metre tower, with installation planned for this autumn. The announcement comes in the same year the park celebrates its 100th anniversary.
New play equipment details
Gateshead Council shared the first details of the attraction this week, posting a CGI image on Facebook and stating: "We are investing in a brand-new junior play area at Saltwell Park, which will be installed this autumn, and are excited to share what it will look like."
The new equipment will include a 9 metre tower to encourage more adventurous play, ground level activities for younger children and those less confident, and quieter areas to help children take time away from busier parts of the park.
Funding and design
The project has received funding from the UK Government's Pride in Place Impact Fund. Gateshead Council worked with playground and outdoor fitness designer and manufacturer KOMPAN to create something described as "ambitious, adventurous and memorable" for Gateshead and a "true centrepiece" for Saltwell Park.
Saltwell Park is one of the best-known parks in the North East, with parks across the region having been awarded Green Flag status earlier in the summer. The new playground is expected to attract more visitors through the gates.
