Set in 1788, shortly after the loss of the American colonies, the film depicts King George III exhibiting peculiar behavior. He attacks a shrubbery with a stick, believing he is battling the Americans, and runs around in his nightwear. Despite his unpredictable actions, he remains dedicated to his wife, Queen Charlotte.
The rural physician Dr. Willis, played by Ian Holm, is summoned to treat the king using unconventional and severe methods that test royal etiquette and early mental health treatments. While his behavior may seem entertaining, it signals a concerning loss of sanity.
