Romantic Village 2hrs from Newcastle with Walking Trails

A woman has discovered what she believes to be 'the most romantic village in England' that's just 98 miles from Newcastle, describing it as an utterly 'charming' destination for a day out.

Grasmere: A Love Letter to England

The Lake District boasts numerous bustling market towns and picturesque villages nestled amongst dramatic fells and stunning lakes. While there are countless renowned locations for experiencing the area's breathtaking scenery, lesser-known spots away from the busiest tourist hotspots are equally deserving of attention. With Newcastle situated nearby, it serves as an ideal base for a day trip.

Among those who've ventured into the Lake District's quieter villages is Cecilia, a Manchester resident who chronicled her visit to what she termed 'a love letter to England'. Posting on TikTok, where she regularly shares her travels under the handle 'itsanomadlifestyle', Cecilia captured her trips to the local Daffodil gardens while soaking up the stunning scenery of this Lake District gem.

Literary and Artistic Heritage

The village she's referring to is Grasmere, situated in the Lake District and merely an hour's journey from Lancaster. Once hailed by poet William Wordsworth as "the most loveliest spot that man hath found," it continues to be amongst the region's most sought-after destinations, celebrated for its striking fells, rich literary connections, and renowned gingerbread. Literature and history enthusiasts can still explore Wordsworth's Dove Cottage, where the renowned poet penned the majority of his significant works, alongside its museum and gardens.

Further artistic interpretations of the region's splendour can be discovered at the Heaton Cooper Studio. Founded by landscape artist Alfred Heaton Cooper in 1938, the gallery currently hosts three exhibitions displaying the creations of the Heaton Cooper family – artists who have treasured the Lake District.

Activities and Scenery

Should you be fortunate enough to visit on a bright day, you can also rent a charming pastel-hued rowing boat before taking in the vistas from Grasmere lake, situated at the heart of the village, offering you ideal views of the encircling countryside. With motorised boats prohibited on the lake, it's also an excellent spot for wild swimming or to appreciate the picturesque walking route that surrounds it.

The village is also nestled at the base of imposing fells such as Helm Crag, positioning it as an ideal starting point for fell walking. Alternatively, you can simply savour the peace and browse the local independent boutiques, tearooms, and traditional pubs.

"The most romantic English village I've ever found. An English village home to one of the country's greatest poets. Grasmere, Lake District," Cecilia penned in the caption accompanying her post.
