Rob Reiner and his son Jake have opened up about their collaborative filmmaking process, the profound grief following the death of Rob’s wife, and the weight of a Hollywood legacy. In a rare joint interview, the pair discussed how their personal and professional lives have intertwined in the wake of tragedy.
A Family Affair
The Reiners have teamed up for a new project, which marks Jake’s directorial debut with his father starring in the lead role. Rob, known for directing classics like When Harry Met Sally and A Few Good Men, said working with his son brought a fresh dynamic to the set.
“It was a completely different experience,” Rob said. “Jake has his own vision, and I had to trust him completely. It made me see him in a new light.”
Coping with Loss
The interview also touched on the death of Rob’s wife, Michele Singer, who passed away in 2023. Jake spoke about how the family has navigated their grief, and how filmmaking has served as a form of therapy.
“We’ve always been close, but this brought us even closer,” Jake said. “Making this movie gave us something to focus on, a way to channel our emotions into something creative.”
Carrying the Torch
Reflecting on his father’s legendary career, Jake acknowledged the pressure of living up to the Reiner name. “I’ve grown up watching my dad make movies, and now I’m making one with him. It’s surreal, but I feel like I’ve learned from the best,” he said.
