Heather-Jay Jones, known for playing Melody in the BBC children's series The Queen's Nose, has left her acting career behind and now works as a primary school teacher. The show aired from 1995 until 2003 and became a staple of afterschool viewing for many in the 1990s.
From BBC screens to the classroom
Based on Dick King-Smith's novel of the same name, the series followed 12-year-old Harmony, played by Victoria Shalet, after she was given a magical 50p coin by her Uncle Ginger. The coin could grant any wish whenever Queen Elizabeth II's nose was rubbed, opening endless possibilities for the main character.
Aside from Harmony, viewers were drawn to her sibling rivalry with older sister Melody, portrayed by Heather-Jay Jones. At the height of her acting career, she also appeared in the comedy series The House That Jack Built and the emergency drama London's Burning.
It has been nearly 32 years since Heather-Jay first played Melody, and her life now looks completely different. After The Queen's Nose, she quit acting and now works as a primary school teacher, away from the spotlight.
Co-star Victoria Shalet also changed careers
Leading actress Victoria Shalet also left acting for a nine-to-five role. She is now a psychotherapist for individuals and couples, working in areas including abuse, grief, and child-related issues.
Although the BBC actors have moved on from their iconic roles, the show's impact is still felt today. Reddit users recently gathered to celebrate the kids' show, with one posting: "Getting home after school and watching The Queens Nose was great."
Another user wrote: "The amount of respect I have for 50p coins- even until this day- just because of this show is ridiculous lool," while a third commented: "I have always thought the theme was an all timer- it's a nostalgia injection."
