Prince Edward Drops in Succession After Eugenie's Baby Update

Royal fans have spotted a major update on Buckingham Palace's official website following the birth of Princess Eugenie's third child. The change has moved Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, down one place in the line of succession.

New Baby Moves Edward Down

Princess Eugenie gave birth to a baby girl on August 3 in Lisbon, Portugal, weighing 6lb 9oz. The child, named Adelaide, is the daughter of Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank and is a younger sibling to brothers August, five, and Ernest, three.

Adelaide is now 15th in line to the throne, with her great uncle, the Duke of Edinburgh, moving down to 16th place. The update was reflected on the Royal Family's official website, which fans noticed had been changed to show the new order.

Royal Baby's Name and Tribute

Princess Eugenie revealed on Instagram that her daughter is called Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank. The name is a tribute to “three people we love and admire past and present”, including the late Queen Elizabeth II, and reflects both English and Portuguese history – “two places we love and call home”.

The name Adelaide is understood to have been inspired by Queen Adelaide (1792-1849), who was married to King William IV, as well as Santa Maria Adelaide of Portugal. Annina was inspired by a personal connection to Eugenie and Jack, though the details have not been revealed.

Fifth Grandchild for Andrew and Ferguson

Adelaide is the fifth grandchild of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, following the birth of Princess Beatrice's daughter, Athena Mapelli Mozzi, in January last year. Adelaide is also the 15th great-grandchild of the late Queen, and the third to be born since the monarch's death in 2022.

Adelaide is not an HRH. Her birth was a rare occasion where a member of the British Royal Family was born overseas, with Eugenie and her husband having a home and other connections in Portugal.
