Polka dots make a return every summer, alongside similarly classic florals, stripes and gingham. This year, though, they feel ubiquitous. From the sea of polka dots at Olivia Dean concerts to Kate Middleton’s Royal-approval and the unofficial Wimbledon dress code, the whimsical print is dominating both the high street to high end. Resistance is futile: it’s only a matter of time before they find their way into your wardrobe.
The History of Polka Dots
Polka dots entered the fashion lexicon way back in the mid-19th century, the name derived from the Czech Bohemian polka dance. Despite being around for some 200 years, there's something about those precise, ordered circles that always manages to feel current. Once, dots were interpreted as a sign of illness; now, the only thing infectious about them is their wearability.
Natalie Dickson, Head of Women’s Luxury at Flannels, explains: “Polka dots are one of those timeless prints that fashion returns to time and again, but this season they’re being reinterpreted in a way that feels particularly fresh. Designers have been leaning into playful, graphic prints across recent collections, and the polka dot offers an easy way to introduce pattern while still feeling classic. From delicate micro dots to larger statement prints, the pattern feels versatile and modern rather than overly retro.”
How to Wear Polka Dots in 2026
How to wear polka dots in 2026? It’s “all about clean styling and contemporary silhouettes”, reveals Dickson. “Rather than leaning into a vintage-inspired look, pairing the print with modern shapes or minimal accessories keeps the outfit feeling fresh.” She spotlights Flannels’ current selection, which includes Chloe’s polka dot blouse and Stine Goya’s A-line frock, which illustrate how polka dots can feel elevated when paired with tailoring or sleek separates.
The Princess of Wales wore this season’s polka dot trend to the Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace on May 8, 2026.
Polka Dots in Pop Culture and Fashion
If you’re sold, you’ll be in good company. Notable figures who have put the polka in the spotlight include Marilyn Monroe, Julia Roberts in that Pretty Woman brown and white polka dot dress, and Princess Margaret and later Princess Diana, who both wore the print in a departure from narrow Royal dress codes. Designers have showcased polka dot looks in their recent collections, too. Last year, London-based label Edeline Lee championed blue dots on exaggerated, flowing silhouettes and this year, Dries Van Noten took the baton, bringing forth a dopamine hit with bright, cheerful spots layered over bold backgrounds and sheer fabrics. Valentino, too, jumped on the hot spots for SS26: see creative director Alessandro Michele's sheer polka dot blouse paired with an origami pencil skirt in a chartreuse shade (another major colour story for SS26).
Dickson says: “A sleeveless top, midi dress or A-line skirt in a breathable fabric feels effortless for warm weather. Pieces such as Anine Bing’s lightweight Amelie cami or the Ganni polka skirt are great examples of how the print can be styled simply with sandals or trainers for an easy, polished summer look.”
