A couple has left people baffled after revealing they gave all of their children the exact same first name – a decision that has caused complications years later.
One Reddit user shared that a family friend had given all of their sons the same first name as their father, but the user had never realised because they knew the children by their middle names. The user wrote: "Just found out that a family friend named all their sons the father's name. I knew all of them by their middle names, so I never noticed."
"The father didn't want the younger boys to feel left out and only name the first boy his name, so he gave them all his name."
Confusion with post and identity
To make matters more confusing, all the boys' middle names start with the same letter, meaning it would be impossible to know which of the boys a letter or other piece of post is intended for. The Reddit user added: "Thankfully, they're all homeschooled. Not the name, but imagine you have four 'John J. Doe's' in four consecutive grades."
Commenting on the post, one user said: "I had a coworker like this – first names were identical, middle names were very similar, beginning with the same letter. One of the kids stole the identity of two of the other siblings (the two they resembled the most physically)."
"The two that had identities stolen unfortunately had set up some official type stuff with first name-middle initial only, so the theft was incredibly easy."
Similar family naming traditions
Another user added: "A friend married Robbie. At the wedding, his brothers Robert, Rob, and Bob were his best men. Yes, all four boys had the first name Robert. Apparently it was a family thing dating back 150+ years."
A third user said: "I have a student who has the exact same first, middle, and last name as his older brother. Not a single letter is different. They both go by their first name. No nicknames/differences. It is absolutely mind-boggling to me."
One more user described working in a hospital lab with a family where everyone had the same first name, male or female, and middle names with the same initial. The user wrote: "This was life or death stuff and was both frustrating and terrifying. I vowed to never ever do this, but I only had one child, so it was a non-issue for me."
George Foreman's famous example
Late boxer and businessman George Foreman famously named all of his sons after himself. The two-time heavyweight champion, who died in March 2025, was father to George Jr, George 'Monk' III, George 'Big Wheel' IV, George 'Red' V, and George 'Little Joey' VI. He also had seven daughters, including Georgetta.
Writing on his personal website, the legendary fighter said: "I named all my sons George Edward Foreman so they would always have something in common. I say to them, 'If one of us goes up, then we all go up together. And if one goes down, we all go down together!'".
