Around two million people are expected to descend on west London over the next two days as Notting Hill Carnival takes over the W10 district for Europe’s biggest street party. This year’s festivities mark 60 years since the carnival’s inception, which was originally born out of resistance to racial injustice.
Celebrating Caribbean Culture
The annual celebration of Caribbean culture will see mas bands, steel pan bands, dancers, and sound systems light up the area in colour, glitter, and feathers. Following Saturday’s Steel Band Competition, today will see the colourful J’ouvert opening celebration at Ladbroke Grove, followed by the much-anticipated Children’s Day and Dutty Mas parade, kicking off at Westbourne Park.
Sounds of calypso, samba reggae, and soca are expected through the day until 7pm. Festivities will continue tomorrow when the Adult’s Day parade will mark the height of carnival.
