Nell Whittingham, who has died aged 93, was a pioneering figure in the field of social work and a dedicated advocate for children's welfare. She began her career in the 1950s and quickly became known for her innovative approaches to child protection.
Early life and career
Born in 1933 in Newcastle upon Tyne, Whittingham studied social sciences at the University of Durham. After graduating, she worked as a child care officer in London, where she developed a reputation for her compassionate and effective work with vulnerable families.
Contributions to social work
In the 1970s, she became one of the first social workers to specialize in child sexual abuse, a field that was then largely unrecognized. She published several influential papers and trained countless social workers in how to identify and respond to abuse.
Whittingham also served as a consultant for the Department of Health and was a member of several government committees on child welfare. Her work helped shape policies that prioritized the safety and well-being of children.
Personal life
She is survived by her two children and three grandchildren. Her husband, John, predeceased her in 2005.
