The 2026 Miles Franklin Literary Award shortlist has been revealed, with six Australian novels competing for the nation's most prestigious book prize. The winner will be announced at a ceremony in September.
The Shortlisted Books
The shortlist includes a mix of established and emerging voices, with works spanning historical fiction, contemporary drama, and experimental storytelling. Each title was selected from a longlist of twelve by a panel of judges.
Among the contenders are novels exploring themes of identity, colonialism, family, and the Australian landscape. The judges praised the shortlist for its diversity and the high quality of writing.
Award Significance
The Miles Franklin Award, established in 1957, is given annually to the novel judged to be of the highest literary merit that presents Australian life in any of its phases. The winner receives AUD 60,000.
The shortlist announcement comes ahead of the award ceremony, where the winner will be revealed. Last year's winner was praised for its powerful narrative and distinctive voice.
