Midcentury Markets Returns to Chester, 'World's Most Beautiful City'

Midcentury Markets is set to return to Chester on Sunday, July 5, bringing a curated selection of retro homewares, furniture, lighting and collectables from the 1940s through to the 1970s. The event will take place at The Carriage Shed on City Road, which is less than an hour from Liverpool city centre by train or car.

Specialist Traders and Iconic Brands

The market will feature specialist traders from across the UK showcasing authentic mid-century treasures, including pieces from renowned brands such as Hornsea, G-Plan, Ercol, Knoll and Eames. Visitors can browse everything from furniture and lighting to ceramics, décor and collectables, all while enjoying nostalgic music and refreshments.

Event Details and Ticket Pricing

The event runs from 11am to 4pm. Tickets are sold in hourly arrival slots to manage visitor numbers: Early Bird Entry (11am) costs £5, Standard Entry (from 12pm) costs £3, and children under 12 are free. Once inside, guests are welcome to stay as long as they wish. Advance ticket holders receive priority entry, while walk-up visitors are welcome subject to capacity. Organisers recommend booking in advance, particularly for the popular Early Bird sessions, which regularly sell out.

Chester: The World's Most Beautiful City

As well as exploring the market, visitors can enjoy Chester, which was previously named the 'Most Beautiful City in the World'. The accolade is based on research examining the golden ratio—a special mathematical proportion that is naturally attractive to humans—of architecture in cities worldwide. Chester beat Venice to secure the top position with 83.7% of buildings adhering to the golden ratio.

Future Events: Cheshire Decorative, Antiques and Art Fair

Later in the year, antiques lovers can head to the Chester Racecourse County Grandstand for the Cheshire Decorative, Antiques and Art Fair, held over two floors. The fair will offer pieces from classic and 20th century jewellery, silver and ceramics to fine paintings, period furniture, copper and brass, bronze Art Deco statuary, period rugs, fine glass, impressive mirrors, medical and scientific instruments, antiquarian maps and prints. The fair takes place on Friday, October 16 and Saturday, October 17 from 11am to 5pm, and on Sunday, October 18 from 11am to 4.30pm. Admission is £7.50 on the door or £5 pre-purchased.
