The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are set to move back to the UK later this month after years in California, following their departure from working royal roles in January 2020. It is understood they will not return to royal duties.
Rapprochement with the King
A key sign of a rapprochement between King Charles III and his second son was their meeting at Highgrove House last month. The monarch is presumed to be happy that Harry is coming home, though there will be no change to Harry and Meghan's status as private individuals and non-working members of the royal family.
Public Opinion and Family Estrangement
YouGov polling suggests people still tend to see Prince Harry negatively, with 58% holding an unfavourable view compared to 33% who view him positively. Only 22% of Britons see Meghan in a positive light, with 65% holding an unfavourable opinion of her.
Prince William, who is estranged from Harry, is said to still be "smouldering" over his brother's "betrayal" of his family. Royal expert Jennie Bond told The Mirror it would be a "big ask" for Harry to expect his family to forgive and forget.
Impact on the Royal Family
The late Queen Elizabeth II would be forgiven for smiling knowingly as Harry has now seemingly given up on leading a different life overseas. The move back to Britain could mean that he and Meghan pursue a "half-in, half-out" role purportedly forbidden by the late sovereign. By returning, they are kicking a hornets nest.
