The Guardian's picture editors have selected photographs from around the world, capturing a range of events from a Madonna installation in London to wildfires in Europe and a drought-exposed WWII shipwreck.
Madonna installation and wildfires
In London, the C'mon Meet Me on the Dancefloor installation at Outernet celebrated Madonna's 68th birthday. Meanwhile, in Treorchy, UK, a wildfire blazed through the Ynysfeio forest in south Wales, with the view from Bute Street captured in the early hours of Sunday morning.
In Düren, Germany, a helicopter dropped water on the Hürtgenwald forest fire. Authorities evacuated 2,000 people from the district of Gey as the blaze consumed more than 200 hectares (494 acres) of land, making it the biggest wildfire ever in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Earthquakes and drought
In Maumere, Indonesia, people evacuated because of a magnitude-7.7 earthquake were placed in temporary shelters in East Nusa Tenggara province. According to the national search and rescue agency of Indonesia, at least 51 people died as a result of the earthquake.
In Quibdó, Colombia, people on motorcycles passed in front of a destroyed building in the Medrano neighbourhood after a 7.4-magnitude earthquake. At least 287 people have died, thousands have been injured and about 379 remain unaccounted for.
In Sremska Mitrovica, Serbia, the wreckage of the Slovenac, a paddle-wheel tugboat built in 1913, emerged from the low waters of the Sava River as drought and prolonged hot and dry weather lowered water levels across the region. The Slovenac sank on 25 April 1945 after striking a German mine while transporting supplies and wounded soldiers in the final days of the second world war.

In London, UK, Felipe Drugovich of Brazil drove the Andretti Formula E Porsche 99X Electric during a practice session at the London E-Prix. In Navarra, Spain, runners, or mozos, were chased by the bulls of Pedro Dominguez's ranch in the Pilon de Falces bull run.
In San Sebastián, Spain, the 61st international fireworks contest of the Semana Grande took place. In Birmingham, UK, the British men's and women's 4 x 100m relay gold medalists at the European Athletics Championships were photographed.
Festivals and events
In Hampshire, UK, the Boomtown festival illuminated the South Downs national park at Cheesefoot Head near Winchester. This year's festival has been hit by dust problems due to the heatwave. In Paredes de Coura, Portugal, a crowd enjoyed MEUTE's surprise afternoon performance at the River Coura during the final day of the Paredes de Coura festival.
In Berlin, Germany, participants in the Rave the Planet techno parade walked through the streets of Berlin. In Bugac, Hungary, horse riders in costume took part in the second day of the Great Hun-Turkic Kurultaj event, which brings together communities of Hun and Turkic descent to celebrate their heritage.

In Brooklyn, New York, Coney Island beach on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean was photographed. The beaches will soon close to swimmers as autumn approaches in New York and lifeguard cover ends. In Mannenbach, Switzerland, a floating jetty and boats were stranded on the dried-up shores of the Untersee during the heatwave.
In Fnideq, Morocco, a member of Moroccan security stood guard as people gathered on a hill to try to cross to the Spanish city of Ceuta. In Kabul, Afghanistan, Taliban security personnel danced with a rocket-propelled grenade during celebrations to mark the fifth anniversary of their return to power.
In Ningbo, China, the Dubai Tower container ship, operated by the Chinese shipowner Sea Legend, set sail from Ningbo heading to Felixstowe in the UK. The ship owner began the first weekly container service through the Arctic on an express route to Europe on 15 August, planning to make the voyages until October and prompting concerns over vessels warming polar ice.
In Kent, UK, activists from Stand Up to Racism assembled outside County Hall in Maidstone to counter-protest against the far-right Kent Nationalist Movement. In Cornwall, UK, Andy Burnham saw potatoes being sorted during a visit to Colwyn Farm near Truro.
