How to Apply Liquid Eyeshadow
Daub the product onto the middle of your eyelid from lash line to socket, avoiding the inner and outer corners initially. Then take a clean fluffy shadow-blending brush and buff in a windscreen wiper motion to spread across the corners and soften any hard lines. A long-wearing formula will last all day.

Mac’s Multi Sculpt Matte Liquid Eye and Face Colour (£22) is a brilliant eyeshadow, though Hughes notes it is not a very good face colour as it dries before it can be properly blended on the cheeks. On eyelids, it is a godsend, especially in warmer weather. The shades are muted and foolproof. Buffed Up is a dusty, cool-ish pinky brown that goes with every lipstick and outfit. Stone is a cool, mousey taupe that mimics shadow and visible socket lines. For classic beige lovers, Brulé is based on Mac’s bestselling powder shadow. Whichever of the 14 shades you choose, you are on to a winner.
Make Up By Mario Master Mattes Long-Wear Cream Eyeshadow
Make Up By Mario’s Master Mattes Long-Wear Cream Eyeshadow (£25) is available in fewer colours but lasts just as long and has a suede-like finish that works brilliantly as a base for powder shadows. Mauve is Hughes’ most worn shade, but there are no duds.
High-Street Alternatives
Hughes expresses frustration at the lack of a high-street equivalent to these eyeshadows. Most decent long-wearing bargains have a less versatile, more effortful metallic finish that won't flatter older eyes. Somewhere between luxury and mass is REM Beauty’s Starlet Liquid Eyeshadow Matte (£15), a waterproof liquid lid colour in boring, bland nudes that prove indispensable. Shades like Ty and Ily carry enough pigment for deep skin tones, while Nvm is a warm, peachy camel that suits most.
