Finding Art in Lockdown: A Photographer's Rooftop Discovery
During the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, many people found themselves confined to their homes, seeking creative outlets in limited spaces. For Spanish photographer Dominic Dähncke, this period of isolation led to an unexpected artistic breakthrough on the rooftop of his building in El Médano, Tenerife.
The Accidental Setup: A Broom, a Nail, and Perfect Timing
In 2021, Dähncke would often take walks on the communal terrace of his home, which was filled with laundry rooms and cleaning supplies, to enjoy fresh air during lockdown restrictions. One morning, he absent-mindedly propped a broom against a nail stuck in the wall, noticing it stayed at a precise 45-degree angle. Intrigued, he returned over several days, waiting for the shadow from a small ceiling above to align perfectly before capturing the moment with his iPhone XS.
"Telekinesis," Dähncke jokes when describing how the broom appears to stand upright, though he admits the nail was already there, not placed by him. This simple yet striking composition became a testament to finding inspiration in mundane surroundings.
Rethinking Photography: Beauty Close to Home
Dähncke reflects on a common misconception in photography: that compelling images require exotic locations like New York, London, or Paris. "Someone has sold us the idea that if you like street photography, for example, you have to travel to major cities," he says. "Now, obviously, if you're a fan of photographing giraffes and you live in Tokyo, you're in trouble. But I think there's a middle ground where we often lose ourselves, and the photo we want to take is closer than we think, often just around the corner."
He emphasizes the importance of cultivating a curious gaze, akin to that of a child or a tourist exploring their own town. "It is our responsibility to nurture that sense of wonder," Dähncke adds, highlighting how lockdown taught him to appreciate small details, such as the space and air on his rooftop.
A Lasting Reminder of Simplicity
The photograph serves as a personal memento for Dähncke, reminding him of the lessons learned during the pandemic. "After the pandemic, I tend to forget I don't need much," he notes. "This photo reminds me of that."
