Lego's New Gustav Klimt The Kiss Art Set Is a 4,000-Piece Masterpiece
Lego's Klimt The Kiss Set: 4,000-Piece Art Masterpiece

Lego has unveiled its most ambitious Art Masterpiece set yet: a recreation of Gustav Klimt's iconic painting The Kiss. The set, comprising 4,000 individual pieces, is the largest and most expensive in the series, retailing at £269.99.

Set Details and Design

The Kiss, originally painted around 1907 by Austrian Symbolist Gustav Klimt, features a man and a woman embracing in ornate, gold-leafed robes. The Lego version captures the painting's intricate patterns and gold accents using a mix of standard bricks, gold-colored coiled whips for circular shapes, and small squares and quarter-circles. The result is a 3D effect that protrudes from the brick-built canvas, measuring 60cm by 54cm and 4cm deep.

Collaboration and Release

The set was developed in collaboration with the Belvedere Museum in Vienna, where the original painting is permanently displayed. A special podcast featuring the Lego designer and museum curator Stephanie Auer will be available from August 1 on Lego.com, Spotify, and YouTube. The set (number 31221) launches on August 4 via the Lego website and retail stores, but Lego Insiders can purchase it from August 1.

Background and Reception

Lego's Art Masterpiece line includes previous recreations of works by Keith Haring, the Mona Lisa, Vincent van Gogh, and Claude Monet. The Klimt set is noted for its realism, especially from a distance, despite being made entirely from standard Lego pieces. Like other sets in the range, it can be hung on a wall using a special Lego piece on the back.

According to Lego, the set is designed for adults and offers a challenging build experience. The company has seen growing demand for sets based on fine art, as part of a broader strategy to appeal to adult hobbyists beyond pop-culture franchises.
