The Dark, the STV detective drama starring Outlander’s Laura Donnelly, airs its long-awaited final episode tonight. Detective Inspector Monica Kennedy has been hunting a serial killer in the Scottish Highlands, and viewers will finally learn the killer’s identity.
Cast hints at more seasons
STV has not confirmed whether the series will return, but the cast has addressed the possibility of a second season. Lead star Laura Donnelly told the Daily Record: “Monica's whole backstory, the way it has shaped who she is, there are still, even as we finish season one, there are still tonnes of question marks about that, and a long, long way to explore.”
Donnelly noted that many detective dramas reveal character details quickly, but The Dark takes a different approach. Co-star Mark Rowley, who plays DC Conor Crawford, added: “It's nice just to prolong that, to keep the audience hooked in for longer to be like, 'Okay, what's really going on here?'”
Backstory to unfold over potential seasons
Donnelly shared that the knowledge she has could take several seasons to work through. “That can also be a singular event that people try and explain this character's entire way of being... [Everything] is interwoven, as well, but in a very psychological way,” she said.
The drama has drawn comparisons to Shetland and Karen Pirie, and has received high praise. One IMDb user wrote: “I like the bravery of being controversial and tackling difficult, prevalent issues, and the end of the first episode genuinely gave me the creeps & got me hooked!” Another added: “Well worth your time! Would be nice to see season two sometime, hopefully it gets greenlit!”
