Katie Piper has revealed that the horrific acid attack she suffered almost 20 years ago served as an "idiot filter" in her love life, helping her attract the right kind of man. The activist and campaigner, now 42, was attacked in March 2008 when an ex-boyfriend arranged for sulphuric acid to be thrown in her face in north London, causing severe damage and blindness in one eye.
From Victim to Campaigner
Since the attack, Katie has become a prominent campaigner for burns victims, founding her own charity, writing books, and producing documentaries on the subject. She is now a married mother of two, having wed carpenter Richard Sutton in 2015.
Speaking to The Times, Katie explained how her changed appearance became a filter in her relationships: "Because I would never attract a man who fall out of love with me because I've aged or gained weight, or because he meets a younger model - her just wouldn't fancy me in the first place."
Supportive Husband
Katie also shared a touching anecdote about her husband's support when she received her OBE. "My husband wasn't around when the reason for my charity work took place, so he kindly stood down and said: 'I shouldn't be your plus-one. It should be your mum or your dad. It was a really good thing to do with mum, to give her back something that was joyful."
The campaigner, who waived her right to anonymity to raise awareness, was brutally raped by Daniel Lynch shortly after meeting him. He threatened her with a razor, stabbed her in the arms, and later lured her to an internet cafe where an accomplice, Stefan Sylvestre, threw acid in her face. Both men were sentenced to life in prison.
Facing Trolls and Building Resilience
Katie described the physical pain: "When the acid was thrown at me, it felt like I was burning in hell. It was an indescribable, unique, torturous pain." She also revealed how online trolls would use AI to alter her photos, asking bots to "make her look normal." Despite this, she remains unfazed: "Is what they did morally or ethically wrong? I don't know. Did it hurt me? No. Would it hurt someone else who didn't have 20 years of rebuilding confidence and self-esteem? Yes, I think it would."
Beyond her advocacy, Katie appeared on Strictly Come Dancing in 2018, where she was the third couple eliminated with professional dancer Gorka Marquez. She joined Loose Women in 2021 and was awarded an OBE the following year.
