Jousting returned to West Lothian on Saturday as part of Historic Scotland's annual Spectacular Jousting event, which featured a range of medieval-themed experiences for visitors. The event saw the thundering of hooves and clash of lances as four knights battled to become the tournament champion.
Jousting Arena Set Up at Linlithgow Palace
The jousting arena was set up in the shadow of Linlithgow Palace, the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots. Jousters calling themselves names such as Sir Checkmate Fitzpercy and Sir Archibald Douglas put on two shows of the extreme Middle Ages sport. The jousting continued on Sunday and is organised annually by Historic Environment Scotland (HES).
Additional Attractions and Reenactments
Visitors also enjoyed falconry displays and historic reenactments, some of which portrayed the reign of King Robert the Bruce. Children were able to take part in medieval-themed crafting and meet the horses. Kit Reid, head of experience at HES, said: “Spectacular Jousting is one of our best loved family-friendly events, and visitors have enjoyed feeling as though they have been transported back to the Middle Ages under the backdrop of Linlithgow Palace. Out in the wonderful sunshine, visitors have experienced exhilarating horsemanship and medieval hijinks, with a colourful line-up of daring competitors and their noble steeds.”
