Jodie Comer became emotional during an exclusive interview with the ECHO as she opened up about two Liverpool moments that will stay with her forever. The 33-year-old actress, from Childwall, discussed her new film, The Death of Robin Hood, and how her upbringing in the city has shaped her.
Passion ignited at Liverpool Drama Festival
Comer first fell in love with acting at the Liverpool Drama Festival when she was 12 years old. Her monologue on the Hillsborough disaster elicited an emotional response from her dad, Jimmy, and ignited her passion.
Now, 21 years later, the Killing Eve star is a bona fide movie star. Her latest film, The Death of Robin Hood, sees her star as Sister Brigid in a gritty retelling of the folk legend, alongside Hugh Jackman.
Despite holding her own with A-list actors, Comer told the ECHO she feels no different from her days working part time behind the checkouts at the Woolton Tesco. She believes her upbringing in the city keeps her grounded.
Emotional return to Liverpool
Comer described 2026 as a "quiet year" by her own busy standards, but two occasions will always stay close to her heart. In March, she brought the curtain down on her role as Tessa in Prima Facie with a performance at the Liverpool Playhouse.
Her performance as Tessa earned her a Tony Award in 2023. She said: "To go back to Liverpool with Prima Facie. I don't really have the words for it."
Comer also became emotional when speaking about her visit to the Hill Dickinson stadium in May for Everton's final home game of last season. Her dad, a beloved figure at the Blues, was retiring from his position as club masseur after 29 years.
Working with Hugh Jackman
Comer described the opportunity to work with The Death of Robin Hood director Michael Sarnoski as a "pinch me moment". The film reimagines Robin Hood as a violent outlaw, and Comer's performance as healer nun Sister Brigid infuses the bleak landscape with heart and humanity.
Comer dons an unusual red bob for the film, but explained the transformation could have been even more drastic. She said: "When I first spoke to Michael, he was like, 'How do you feel about shaving your head?'"
The next chapter for Comer includes a high profile role in HBO series, The Chain. She said: "I think about growing up in Liverpool and going to a local drama class and never really having made the connection of television eventually being a job."
