An interior designer has shared five common bedroom decor choices that can make the space look tacky rather than chic. The list includes grey colour schemes, matching furniture, fluffy rugs, LED strip lights, and faux silk bedding.
Grey colour schemes and matching furniture
According to Hayley Fellows-Prior, founder of Atelier 44 Interior Design Studio, grey colour schemes, including silver accessories and crushed velvet, have become overdone and feel boring and mass-produced. Despite peaking in popularity recently, they already feel dated. She told Good Housekeeping: "If you love the softness of a neutral bedroom, I’d move away from cool grey and look at warm creams, taupes, linens and natural textures instead. You’ll still get that calm feeling, but with far more warmth and depth."
Matching furniture is another pitfall. Interior designer Samantha-Jane Agbontaen said: "You can tell when someone has just bought everything from the same store. Bed, wardrobes, drawers and bedsides all from the same collection. Mixing pieces makes a room feel curated. You need to make sure the overall look is cohesive and well thought-out."
Fluffy rugs, LED strip lights, and faux silk bedding
Fluffy rugs are not popular with interior designers, especially when placed beside the bed on top of carpet. They are also difficult to clean, as the long fibres trap dust and hair. A flatter weave is recommended instead.
LED strip lights, popular around 2019-2020, now look tired and tacky, particularly around headboards or ceilings, and worse if they change colour. Samantha recommends a bedside lamp for a warm and cosy ambience, which she says does "far more" for the space and is more practical.
Faux silk or satin bedding can cheapen the look of a room. Samantha said: "A bedroom is a personal space. Having cheap satin or shiny bedding that’s a polyester imitation of silk is very tacky. I can’t imagine this is a comfortable fabric to sleep in anyway. Having natural fibres like cotton and linen always looks (and feels) better."
