Hundreds of people gathered at Newcastle Civic Centre on Saturday to mark India's 80th Independence Day, with a free event open to everyone from 4pm until 8pm.
Community celebration with cultural performances
The celebration featured cultural performances, the Indian National Anthem, music, dance and food, bringing together communities from across the North East.
Senior civic and emergency-service representatives attended, including Vice Lord Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear, Chief Constable Vanessa Jardine, the Sheriff and Deputy Lord Mayor of Newcastle, the Mayors of Gateshead and Sunderland, and Northumberland Chief Fire Officer Keith Carruthers.

The event was organised by the Indian Association North East, and saw hundreds of families and visitors come to mark the occasion. A gallery of 20 photos captured some of those who arrived early to start the day.
