Lud's Church, an 18-metre deep chasm in the Peak District caused by a giant landslip thousands of years ago, has been described by visitors as 'like stepping into another world'. The gorge, located near the village of Gradbach, spans around 100 metres and is lined with green, moss-covered walls, with trees creating a canopy overhead that keeps it cool on warm summer days.
A magical hidden gem
One reviewer, K 'flower mum adventures' M, wrote on Google: 'Absolutely loved our visit to Lud's Church. Hidden away in the forest, this place genuinely feels like stepping into another world. The moss-covered walls, cool air, and narrow pathways through the chasm make it feel so magical and peaceful.' Another reviewer, Rochelle, said: 'What a unique place to visit, a hidden gem. I went here on the back of a hike from the Roaches. Easy to get to and sign posted, good for all ages but very wet and muddy inside. Can get crowded sometimes.'
History and legend
The name Lud's Church stems from the 15th century when it was used as a secret place of worship by the Lollards, followers of early church reformer John Wycliffe. It is reputedly named after Walter de Ludank or Walter de Lud-Auk, who was captured there at one of their meetings. According to legend, the gorge was also used as a hiding place by Robin Hood and his Merry Men, and is said to be the setting of the medieval poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.
How to visit
Lud's Church can be reached via a walking route from Gradbach car park, around 90 minutes' drive from Manchester. Spaces are limited, so it is worth getting there early. The walk through the gorge is not very long, but it can be muddy underfoot and is not accessible for those with limited mobility as there are a few steps to climb.
