Council planners have approved the conversion of a gym in Newmains to make way for a gallery. The decision allows social enterprise The Green Robin, which promotes environmentally friendly living, to establish the gallery in Manse Road.
Community Arts Hub
The premises would serve as a hub supporting community access to arts, craft and creative wellbeing activities. Artists would have opportunities to exhibit and develop their practice, with the public able to view and own the paintings.
Planners' Assessment
In granting approval, the council planners report noted: “The site is predominately commercial premises with residential properties directly across the road. The site is part of terraced building with commercial units on the floor and flats above.”
The report highlighted the site's location within a local centre, on a main bus route with some parking laybys on Manse Road. While there is no dedicated off-street parking, the property has operated as a gym for years without it, and some off-street parking is available nearby.
No Detrimental Impact
Planners concluded: “The proposed use is considered acceptable and will not have a detrimental impact on neighbouring commercial units or residential properties and will bring back a vacant unit back into use.” No representations were received during the neighbour notification process.
The proposal was found to comply with National Planning Framework 4 and the North Lanarkshire Local Development Plan, leading to a recommendation for approval subject to conditions.
