Commuters in Canary Wharf were met with a surprising sight this morning as Montgomery Square appeared to crumble into the Dinosaur Age. The striking 3D display, spanning more than 1,000 feet, was created by award-winning artist and Guinness World Record holder 3D Joe and Max, who have previously set records for the world's largest and longest anamorphic artwork.
Artwork details
The artwork took three weeks to complete and was painted in acrylic on canvas. It features dramatic 3D elements, including a black cab and red phone box that appear to have been sliced in half as they tumble into a prehistoric landscape. The installation brings to life a scene from Warner Bros. Pictures' new film The End of Oak Street, which arrives in UK cinemas on Friday 14 August.
The film stars Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor and follows a cosmic event that tears a suburban street from 1980s suburbia and transports it back to the prehistoric age.
Artist's reaction
Artist Joe Hill said: "As a 3D artist and huge dinosaur enthusiast, this brief couldn't have been more exciting. The End of Oak Street is a thrilling and hugely inventive edge-of-your-seat experience and we've tried to reflect that in this immense immersive art display. It's been great incorporating the 3D elements and seeing people pose within the artwork today has been a joy to behold."
Visitor experience
The installation is on display in Montgomery Square, opposite Canary Wharf station, across Monday and Tuesday. Visitors can step into the world of the film, pick up props and costume pieces inspired by the 1980s setting, and pose for photographs within the artwork. A free slice of pizza is also available, a nod to Greg, the character played by Ewan McGregor, who works as a pizza delivery driver in the film.
The End of Oak Street follows the Platt family after a mysterious cosmic event rips their neighbourhood from suburbia and transports it to a strange prehistoric world. Forced to confront roaming dinosaurs and unfamiliar dangers, the family must work together to survive.
Warner Bros. Pictures enlisted 3D Joe and Max to create the immersive installation. The studio is known for its spectacular anamorphic artworks, producing large-scale creations from New York to Shanghai, and is widely regarded as a pioneer of modern 3D street art.
The free experience is open from 12pm until 7pm, with complimentary pizza available until stocks last.
