Friends first aired 32 years ago, and the stars of the beloved sitcom have taken very different paths since. While the main cast remains famous, the show's recurring characters have experienced everything from heartbreaking loss to peaceful retirement.
A Record-Breaking Legacy
For 10 seasons, Friends provided laughs and tears, becoming one of the most popular and highest-grossing television shows of all time. The series finale in 2004 drew around 52.5 million US viewers, making it the most-watched TV episode of the 2000s. Interestingly, the show underwent several title changes, with previous suggestions including Insomnia Cafe, Six of One, and Friends Like Us.
Gunther's Tragic End
James Michael Tyler, who played Gunther, the Central Perk manager with a crush on Rachel, tragically died in October 2021 at age 59 after a cancer battle. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2018 but kept it secret for about three years until it spread. Before his death, he appeared via Zoom during the Friends reunion, explaining his absence: "I wanted to be a part of that, and initially I was going to be on the stage, at least, with them, and be able to take part in all the festivities. It was bittersweet, honestly. I was very happy to be included. It was my decision not to be a part of that physically and make an appearance on Zoom, basically, because I didn’t wanna bring a downer on it, you know? I didn’t want to be like, ‘Oh, and by the way, Gunther has cancer'."
Janice's New Focus
Maggie Wheeler, now 64, who played Janice, Chandler's on-off girlfriend, has taken on less TV work in recent years. Her last credit was an episode of Bob's Burgers in 2024, and she voiced a nurse in the 2025 animated film Dog Man. She co-founded and directs the Golden Bridge Community Choir in Hollywood, traveling to teach vocal workshops.
Ross and Monica's Parents
Elliott Gould, now 87, who played Jack Geller, went on to star as David "Legal" Siegel in The Lincoln Lawyer. Christina Pickles, now 91, who played Judy Geller, appears retired, with her last acting credit in 2021 on Tuca & Bertie.
Phoebe's Half-Brother
Giovanni Ribisi, now 51, who played Frank Buffay Jr., remains active in film and TV, working on projects like Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 3 and Callback. He made his feature-film cinematography debut in the 2024 film Strange Darling and is in a relationship with Emily Ward, with whom he has fraternal twins.
Estelle's Retirement
June Gable, now 81, who played Joey's agent Estelle Leonard, retired from acting after Friends ended. Speaking to Wealthsimple in 2021, she explained: "As soon as Friends ended, I retired. The man I loved was very ill, and I wanted to be able to take care of him. I was very fortunate because of the Screen Actors Guild that I could afford to do that." She continued acting on stage for a while, adding: "I’m very grateful for television, but it never had as much meaning to me as the theatre." She later appeared in Bradley Cooper's film Maestro in 2023.
