Imperial War Museum North (IWM), the free museum in Stretford by Salford Quays, is hosting a series of events during October half term to keep families entertained. The museum explores the history of warfare in the 20th and 21st centuries, from the First World War to 9/11, with permanent displays and changing exhibitions.
Half-term events and activities
On October 28 from 11am to 3pm, families can meet IWM's veterans and eyewitnesses of conflict for insight into the impact of war on people's lives. The event includes personal stories, recollections and memories from those who experienced conflict first-hand, from driving an Army tank to being evacuated from their homes.
At the Family Activity Hub, 'Making a Museum' shows how a museum comes together, inviting visitors to add their own story to the IWM North Family Canvas. The activity runs daily from 10am to 4pm until Friday October 30 and is suitable for ages five and over.
On Saturday October 31 and Sunday November 1, visitors can take part in the Story Seekers trail, which reveals the real-life stories behind the collection. It is also suitable for ages five and over.
Exhibits and new artwork
The main exhibition space features large artefacts, including a Harrier aircraft suspended from the ceiling, a British nuclear bomb, and wreckage from the September 11 attacks on New York's World Trade Centre.
A new artwork, 'Outrageous Women: Marriage, Religion and Culture', has arrived at the museum. Created by a local group of Indian Punjabi women known as 'The Desi Grannies', it explores family, marriage, religion and the role of women within their culture.
Visitors can also see 'The Roads We Walked', the museum's newest addition to its 360-degree cinematic Big Picture Shows. It celebrates the 80th anniversary of the Fifth Pan-African Congress, held at Chorlton-on-Medlock Town Hall, Manchester, in October 1945. The film was written by young poets from Manchester's literary charity Young Identity, composed entirely from their spoken-word reflections, and is shown daily at 3pm.
Visitor reviews and practical details
IWM has been praised by families on TripAdvisor. One visitor, Laura G, called it a 'fantastic family attraction', writing: "Absolutely brilliant visit with incredible volunteers who really brought the exhibitions to life with their stories and insights. Plenty of parking, great shop, plenty to occupy older kids which is a huge bonus! We'll look forward to returning."
Another reviewer, Paul S, described it as 'amazing', writing: "Another fantastic free attraction. Visited with my wife and 2 sons aged 7 and 14. From the second I went into the main area and saw a harrier jump jet hanging from the ceiling I was like I am going to like this! Loads of interactive exhibits, the video features using the walls as screens are great, some cut very deep regards the cost of war but each one was fantastic in its own way."
The museum's cafe, on the ground floor, is open from 10am to 4.30pm and serves hot meals, sandwiches and cakes. Imperial War Museum North is located at The Quays, Trafford Wharf Rd, Trafford Park, Stretford, Manchester M17 1TZ, and is open daily from 10am to 5pm.
