Fenwick 2026 Christmas Window: Gruffalo's Child Revealed

Fenwick's 2026 Christmas Window on Northumberland Street has been unveiled, with this year's display based on The Gruffalo's Child. The annual tradition is already proving popular, and photographer Craig Connor has captured 24 pictures of the attraction glowing at night in Newcastle city centre.

Festive Reveal Draws Crowds

Invited guests experienced the window reveal at the weekend, with fencing and a short road closure keeping it out of view. On Sunday evening, a large crowd, including children from local schools, gathered ahead of the big moment.

After a song and dance from a cast of performers, Santa Claus began the countdown, and the curtain fell to reveal the festive reimagining of Julia Donaldson's story. People also tuned in to watch the unveiling online, and the theme immediately went down well.

A Beloved Story With a 54-Year Tradition

The Gruffalo's Child book was released in 2004 and was named the 2005 National Book Awards Children's Book of the Year. It has since been adapted into theatrical productions and a 2011 animated film of the same name, which is a Christmas favourite for families.

Author Julia Donaldson and illustrator Axel Scheffler were in Newcastle on Sunday to be in the audience for the window reveal. The tradition has been spreading festive cheer for 54 years, with the first window display taking place back in 1972.

Window Glow Lights Up the Street

Craig Connor has been to see the window to get pictures of it in the dark, as its glow lights up the busy street. The photographs are available to view, and residents are invited to see the special display in person.
