Fans Beg for More Episodes of '20 Stars' Period Drama

Period drama fans are begging for more episodes of Home Fires, a series hailed as a 'masterpiece' and now streaming free on Channel 4 and UKTV. The show, which first premiered in 2015, has gained a devoted following for its portrayal of women's experiences during World War II.

A Hidden Gem in Period Drama

Home Fires is set in the rural Cheshire village of Great Paxford, spanning from September 1932 to early 1940. It follows members of the Women's Institute on the Home Front during the Second World War. The series is based on Julie Summers' book Jambusters and was written by Simon Block, co-directed by Robert Quinn and Bruce Goodinson.

The cast includes Francesca Annis, Daisy Badger, Leanne Best, Samantha Bond, Clare Calbraith, Mark Bonnar, Mark Bazeley, Chris Coghill, and Ruth Gemmell. The ensemble has been widely praised for their compelling performances.

Critical Acclaim and Fan Devotion

Home Fires holds a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics have described it as "British drama that's as satisfying as a warm cup of tea" and "spoonful after spoonful of splendid jam." One review noted: "It's more uplifting and affirming than challenging or surprising, and it is handsomely made with convincing period detail and a fine cast delivering top notch performances."

Fans have been equally enthusiastic. One viewer commented: "The name being Home Fires on Masterpiece, it doesn't lie about the Masterpiece part." Another said: "I absolutely cannot believe that this absolutely incredible series has been cancelled by ITV. It is a major favorite in our household and we miss it terribly."

Devastation Over Cancellation

ITV axed the programme in May 2016 after just two series, leaving fans devastated. Creator Simon Block later continued the story through a novel to resolve the cliffhangers. One viewer wrote: "It's been 4 years since this series was cancelled and I still think about the characters and their lives. I was devastated when I found out, so much so, I signed a petition to get it back on, to no avail."

Another fan expressed frustration: "Why they canceled this binge worthy series is outside my realm of understanding! How utterly disappointing to be left with such an unbelievably maddening cliffhanger."

Where to Watch

Home Fires is currently streaming for free on Channel 4 and UKTV. Despite its cancellation, the series continues to attract new viewers who discover its compelling storytelling and strong female characters.
