Eva Marie Saint, the actor best known for her Oscar-winning performance in On the Waterfront and Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest, has died at the age of 102. Her career spanned eight decades, beginning in television and radio in the late 1940s.
Early life and film debut
Saint was born on 4 July 1924 in Newark, New Jersey. She started working in television and radio in the late 1940s. Her film debut came in 1954 with On the Waterfront, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role and was nominated for the BAFTA Film Award for Most Promising Newcomer. She is pictured with Karl Malden and Marlon Brando in the film.
On 30 March 1955, Saint was photographed with her Academy Award for her portrayal of Edie Doyle in On the Waterfront.
Television and stage work
In 1955, Saint performed alongside Paul Newman and Frank Sinatra in the episode entitled 'Our Town' from the anthology TV series Producers Showcase, which aired on 19 September 1955. She was nominated for the Primetime Emmy for Best Actress - Single Performance.
In 1957, she arrived at Idlewild Airport in New York on 27 May via TWA, accompanied by her husband, Jeffrey Hayden, and her son, Darrel, aged 2, for the premiere of the film A Hatful of Rain. For that film, she was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Actress and a BAFTA Film Award for Best Foreign Actress. That same year, she appeared in Raintree County with Montgomery Clift and Elizabeth Taylor.
Hitchcock and later film roles
In 1959, Saint played Eve Kendall opposite Cary Grant as Roger Thornhill in North by Northwest. She later appeared in All Fall Down (1962) with Warren Beatty, 36 Hours (1965) with James Garner and Werner Peters, and The Stalking Moon (1968) with Noland Clay.
In 1976, she starred in How the West was Won and was nominated for the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series. In 1978, she was nominated for the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama or Comedy Special for her role as Passenger in the TV movie Taxi!!, which consists entirely of a dialogue between her and Martin Sheen, who plays Taxi Driver.
Later career and legacy
In 1990, Saint was photographed with her Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Special in Pasadena, California, on 16 September 1990. She appeared in Titanic (1996) with Marilu Henner and Catherine Zeta Jones, Don't Come Knocking (2005) with Sam Shepard, Superman Returns (2006) with Brandon Routh, and Winter's Tale (2014). In 2018, she presented the award for best costume design at the Oscars.
