Emirates has upgraded the pillows in its economy-class seats on newer A350 aircraft, introducing what it claims is a world-first adjustable headrest called the U-Dream.
The airline shared a video on Instagram showing a passenger pulling down two sections of cushioning behind her head, creating a makeshift travel pillow. The caption read: "Emirates just added something to Economy that no other airline has. Introducing the U-Dream adjustable headrest - just one of the many ways we're continuing to invest in Emirates Economy."
U-Dream headrest details
Branded the U-Dream, the headrest features flexible inward-folding wings designed to cradle the head and neck. So far, it has been fitted on three A350 aircraft, with plans to install it across all of the airline's A350s and most of its Airbus A380s and Boeing 777s.
Emirates is known for its luxurious business and first-class cabins, but the airline said it is equally committed to comfort in economy. The upgrade adds to recent improvements including more legroom and an upgraded on-screen entertainment system, as well as paid Wi-Fi services.
Mixed reactions from passengers
Viewers had mixed reactions. Some praised the innovation, with comments like "THANK YOU EMIRATES" and "@emirates taking things up a level AGAIN!" Others expressed hygiene concerns, with one person writing: "Personally, I will never use this new tool as they are never cleaned." Another said: "U dream: Pre-seasoned headrests, comes with free dried drool flavor from previous passengers."
One commenter noted: "This doesn't address the root issue. When people sleep/doze on the plane, their heads fall forward, not sideways; therefore, they really need something that supports the front of their neck and head/face." Despite the skepticism, many fans were excited about the upgrade.
