Disabled Artists Gain Ground at Major UK Events Through New Roster
In a significant development for inclusivity in the arts, disabled artists are now securing more bookings at major UK events thanks to a pioneering new initiative. UnMute, a specialised music roster launched by Global Local, aims to promote professional recognition and combat what organisers describe as the "infantilisation" of disabled performers within the music industry.
Expanding Performance Opportunities
The initiative has already led to artists being booked for high-profile events such as Shambala, The Great Escape, and St George’s Day celebrations at Trafalgar Square. Chris Tofu of Global Local emphasised the rarity of disabled artists on stage, despite a large and talented community. He pointed to successful past collaborations with acts like Drag Syndrome and Deaf Rave as evidence of the untapped potential in this sector.
UnMute will leverage Global Local's extensive network of festivals and venues to create more performance opportunities. The roster also supports artists' specific needs by utilising the Musicians’ Union Access Rider, ensuring practical adjustments are made for performances, such as accessible stages and tailored support.
Alleviating Administrative Burdens
Artist Emzae, who has ME and OCD, praised UnMute for significantly reducing the administrative burden of her career. She noted that the initiative allows her to focus more on her music and personal well-being, rather than navigating logistical challenges alone. This support is crucial for disabled artists who often face additional barriers in managing their professional lives.
The launch of UnMute marks a proactive step towards greater diversity and accessibility in the UK music scene, highlighting a growing commitment to empowering disabled artists on a national stage.
