Delia Smith, the 85-year-old British chef, has revealed a heartfelt regret about her family life, admitting she would have loved to have children. In a candid reflection, she acknowledged that her career might not have flourished as much if she had a family to care for.
A Career-First Life
In 1969, Delia began working as a cookery writer for the Daily Mirror's newly launched magazine, where she met Michael Wynn-Jones, the deputy editor, whom she married in 1971. The couple never had children, instead focusing on their successful careers, and they are now joint majority shareholders at Norwich City F.C.
Delia once told the press: "Yes, I would have loved to have children," but added, "It wasn't to be, but I have loved what I've been able to do by not having children."
Doubts About Motherhood
Speaking on the podcast How To Fail with Elizabeth Day in 2022, Delia admitted she had "doubts" about being a good mother. She shared: "Although I don't have children, it's never really bothered me, and I have great doubts about whether I would have been a good parent. I really have doubts about that."
She also explained that if she had wanted to address that gap, she would have considered adoption. "That isn't something that's ever been a problem. And if I had [that] problem I would go and adopt an unwanted baby. I wouldn't mind doing that now but I'm too old."
Career Achievements and Legacy
Delia's first television appearance was in the early 1970s, as a resident cook on BBC East's regional magazine programme. This led to her own cookery show, Family Fare, which aired from 1973 to 1975. Her 1995 book, Delia Smith's The Winter Collection, sold 2 million copies in hardback, making it the fifth biggest-selling book of the 1990s.
In February 2013, she announced her retirement from television cookery programmes, choosing to focus on offering her recipes online. Reflecting on her life, she said: "I think if I'd had a family, I would have gone wholeheartedly into being a mother. Maybe one of the reasons I've been so successful in my career is down to the fact I haven't had any children."
