David Kemp obituary: playful and unconventional artist

David Kemp, the artist behind the 2003 exhibition Uncertain Instruments at the Lowry in Salford, has died. The exhibition featured a line of dancing frogs and a violin inspired by Luigi Galvani's discovery of animal electricity in the late 18th century.

Installation challenges

Bill, one of the technicians who installed the exhibition, recalled a challenging week enlivened by Kemp's playful strangeness and flagrant disregard for health and safety. Kemp gave all the techies a copy of his book Things Reconstructed, inscribed to Bill with the words “to Bill, who knows how to make things properly”.
