Director and producer Danny Boyle is bringing an immersive theatrical event to London's Southbank Centre to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Royal Festival Hall. Titled 'You Are Here', the one-day spectacle on 3 May 2026 will traverse 75 years of youth culture and social movements, featuring 1,000 performers and expecting over 10,000 attendees.
Boyle, known for the 2012 Olympics opening ceremony and films such as 'Trainspotting' and 'Slumdog Millionaire', co-created the event as a 'pop culture spectacular' that aims to be an antidote to the curated, tech-driven experiences of modern life. He described today's digital landscape as an 'aquarium of indifference', where extraordinary things float by without nourishing the soul.
The event will not be a traditional pageant or sit-down theatre but a journey through reimagined youth culture moments, using the entire Southbank site as a backdrop. It will be structured around 'five beats', drawing on underground movements, club scenes, subcultural fashion, music, and activism. Poets, MCs, rappers, choral voices, and dancers will weave a kaleidoscopic narrative throughout the day.
Visitors can move from a Northern Soul dancefloor to a communal house party, or from mass participation dance to audiovisual responses to Britain's most anarchic fashion and nightlife movements. Boyle emphasised the importance of 'curated chaos', noting that great cultural movements often emerge from disorder. He hopes the event will inspire young people who feel dissatisfied with what is on offer, encouraging them to engage actively rather than passively consume.
There are no celebrity headliners, though organisers hinted at possible surprises on the day. 'You Are Here' is the centrepiece of a year of anniversary celebrations at the Southbank Centre, created by leading voices across film, theatre, literature, and fashion.
