Coronation Street star Sherrie Hewson has revealed how a chaotic waterbed scene left her co-star Ken Morley with more on display than anyone had bargained for. The actress, who played Maureen Holdsworth, recalled the mishap when asked about the most awkward moment she had experienced while working in television.
Waterbed scene chaos
Sherrie, 76, known for her role as Joyce Temple-Savage in Benidorm, described the scene as "absolutely hysterical." She said: "It has to be the famous waterbed scene with Ken Morley in Corrie! It was absolutely hysterical."
"The bed was filled with gallons of water and when it burst for the scene, it was like a tsunami had hit the set." While Sherrie was safely tucked up in the bed, her co-star was not so lucky, as he found himself caught in the full force of the watery chaos.
She continued: "I was safely in the bed, but poor Ken took the full force of it. To make matters worse, the towel preserving his modesty didn't survive the flood and promptly disappeared! Let's just say there was a lot more of Ken on display than anyone had planned for!"
The Full Monty experience
Away from the Coronation Street cobbles, Sherrie has also shared stories from another unforgettable television experience: taking part in ITV's The Full Monty in 2023. The actress joined Coleen Nolan, Pete Wicks and Paul Burrell for the charity performance, which saw the famous faces strip off on stage to raise awareness and money for good causes.
Recalling the experience, Sherrie said: "The Full Monty was absolutely hysterical. I was with my dear friend Coleen Nolan, who I adore, and wonderful people like Pete Wicks and Paul Burrell. We laughed so much and became really close."
However, getting undressed in front of an audience was a different matter. "We all knew why we were doing it. It was about raising awareness and supporting charities. That's what made it special. As for the stripping off, that was slightly less fun! But we got through it together and were all close friends at the end."
Charity work and Benidorm hopes
Sherrie took part in honour of her late brother Brett, who died from a glioblastoma brain tumour, and continues to support fundraising efforts close to her heart. She is also helping bring the spirit of Benidorm back through Benidorm Nights, a charity event raising money for The Brain Tumour Charity.
The evening promises music, comedy, tapas, prizes and tribute acts celebrating legendary performers, all while raising funds for a cause that means so much to the actress. Although Benidorm ended after 10 series in 2018, Sherrie remains hopeful the much-loved sitcom could return one day, saying the cast would love to reunite.
