Coronation Street has signed up TV favourite Elizabeth Rider for a surprise return to Weatherfield – 20 years after she last appeared on the famous cobbles. The acclaimed actress, 68, is set to make her comeback to the ITV soap later this summer, although this time she'll be stepping into an entirely new role.
Fourth Role on the Cobbles
Elizabeth was last seen on Coronation Street in 2006, when she played the biological mother of Ashley Peacock. Now, two decades on, she's heading back to the long-running soap, with bosses keeping details of her latest character firmly under wraps for now. This will mark her fourth role on the ITV favourite. Before portraying Ashley Peacock's mum in 2006, the actress also appeared in two separate roles in 1999, making her one of the soap's most familiar returning faces.
A source told The Sun: "Corrie bosses are delighted to have tempted Elizabeth for a short stint on the cobbles. She's a legendary actress with a huge amount of talent and everyone's thrilled she's here."
Impressive Soap Career
Elizabeth has built an impressive television career spanning decades and is one of the few performers to have appeared in all four of Britain's biggest soaps. Alongside Coronation Street, she has also landed roles in EastEnders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks, giving her the rare distinction of appearing across the UK's major continuing dramas.
Away from the cobbles, Elizabeth is equally well known for her work in some of British television's biggest dramas. Her screen credits include hit BBC police thriller Line of Duty, psychological drama Doctor Foster and beloved period series Call the Midwife. She also enjoyed a recurring role in BBC One daytime favourite Doctors, where she played DCI Lynette Driver.
Return Expected This Summer
While ITV is yet to reveal exactly who Elizabeth will be playing this time around, her return is expected to air later this summer. With four Coronation Street roles now under her belt and a career packed with memorable performances across British television, fans will be eager to see what drama her latest Weatherfield character brings to the Street.
