A childcare worker who has spent several years at school holiday clubs has shared the most common mistakes parents make each summer. The worker, also a parent herself, highlighted that one of the most frustrating oversights is failing to send children with a refillable water bottle.
She said: "My most important tip... please send a water bottle. Specifically a child-friendly, refillable water bottle." Many parents send juice cartons or fruit drinks instead, but these cannot be topped up during the day. "We refill water bottles frequently throughout the day, but obviously cannot refill a juice carton," she added.

The worker urged parents to read through any information issued ahead of the first day, as it sets out what's included. Some clubs provide breakfast, snacks and a light tea, but lunch is not always part of the deal. Staff often find children arriving without a packed lunch because parents assumed meals would be offered. While her club can prepare a basic meal, not every provider offers that facility.
She also advised parents to pack lunch carefully. Some children arrive with barely enough food, while others have lunchboxes filled with sweets and treats. "We have some kids sent with a sandwich, apple and yoghurt who then complain they're hungry by mid-afternoon. Then we have some sent with bulging lunchboxes filled with every treat imaginable." She reminded parents that many holiday clubs operate a nut-free policy, so peanut butter sandwiches are best left at home.
Backpack, spare clothes and appropriate clothing
A backpack is another must-have, especially for children who love arts and crafts, as they need somewhere to carry creations home. For younger children, a spare set of clothes is recommended in case of accidents or spillages. The worker also urged parents to check the forecast and dress children accordingly, noting it's common for youngsters to arrive in thick jumpers on hot days or shorts in winter.
Parents should avoid sending children in expensive outfits or impractical shoes, as paint, glue and grass stains are virtually unavoidable. Finally, she recommended checking the club's sunscreen policy, as some require application before arrival while others assist with reapplication during the day.
The worker reassured parents that staff are there to ensure children have a wonderful time. She said: "We are there to make your child have a fun summer. I know how scary it can be leaving your child for the first time as I've done it myself, but trust me, they have so much fun that they don't want to leave."
