Outlander star Caitriona Balfe has already lined up her next period drama, an epic based on the true story of Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary's first ascent of Mount Everest.
The film, titled Tenzing, features Balfe as expedition secretary Jill Henderson. It is set for release on Apple TV on Friday, October 16, with a brief cinematic release the week prior on Friday, October 9.
Cast and Characters
Tom Hiddleston portrays Edmund Hillary, while Genden Phuntsok plays Tenzing Norgay. Willem Dafoe joins the cast as Colonel Hunt.
A first-look image shows Tenzing and Hillary looking out over the snow-covered terrain. According to the official synopsis: "Where Western climbers see 'Everest' as something to be conquered, Tenzing reveres 'Chomolungma' as the sacred mother goddess."
Story and Themes
The synopsis continues: "What follows is an ascent defined as much by the tensions between backgrounds, classes and competing ambitions as by the perils of the mountain itself."
"But high above the world, empire, rank and aspiration fall away, leaving two outsiders bound by mutual respect and trust - and for Tenzing, the fulfillment of both a lifelong dream and a spiritual calling."
The film is described as "a story of greatness that refuses to be diminished - and the love that makes it possible."
