The funeral of Oscar-winning Irish actress Brenda Fricker is to be held at St Catherine’s Church in Dublin’s Liberties neighbourhood at 11am on Thursday.
Fricker, 81, died at Our Lady’s Hospice in Dublin’s Harold’s Cross on July 16 after a period of ill-health. The church is located in the area where she grew up.
Award-Winning Career
Fricker won a best supporting actress Oscar for her role as Bridget Fagan Brown in the 1989 film My Left Foot, which starred Daniel Day-Lewis as Christy Brown, an Irishman with cerebral palsy who could only control his left foot.
She was also known for playing the Pigeon Lady in the 1992 sequel Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, and was part of the original cast of the BBC medical drama Casualty.
Stage and Screen
Her other film credits include Veronica Guerin (2003) with Cate Blanchett, So I Married An Axe Murderer (1993), Angels In The Outfield (1994) and A Time To Kill (1996). She also appeared in ITV’s Upstairs, Downstairs and Coronation Street.
Later roles included the TV adaptation of Graham Norton’s novel Holding, directed by Kathy Burke, and the Channel 5 drama The Catch. Fricker also had numerous stage roles in plays such as Lavender Blue and A Pagan’s Place at theatres including the National Theatre and Royal Court Theatre.
Tributes
Her agent Phil Belfield described her as a “legend” and said he was “honoured to know” her.
“Dublin-born and bred, Brenda Fricker undoubtedly deserves the noun legend,” he said. “We will never see her like again and the world is lesser for the lack of her. I was honoured to know, love and work with her, and she will always have a place in my heart and in the heart of so many film and TV fans the world over.”
